About the Bronx RHIO
The Bronx Regional Health Information Organization (Bronx RHIO) is a not-for-profit organization established to build a secure health information exchange that will enable providers across the Bronx to access critical patient information from multiple sources as soon as it is available. Participants include hospitals, health systems, ambulatory care centers, individual physician offices, long-term care and home care services. How it works
The data that is being shared is moved from a facility’s electronic medical record (EMR) to a clinical data repository. There are two key parts to the process of finding a patient’s information and displaying it to the treating physician:- Identifying the right patient
- Finding and displaying the data available for that patient
What happens to the data when the provider is finished using it?
The Virtual Patient Record is not saved except for audit purposes. For audits or to satisfy legal requests, the exact view the provider saw can be reproduced. The provider will be able to print the data he/she is viewing if desired.Who contributes the data?
In the initial phase of implementation the system includes data from all Montefiore Medical Center sites (except home care), Bronx Community Health Network, Bronx Lebanon Hospital, Bronx Lebanon Special Care Center and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Medical Center. All Participants have data viewing capability. Additional data contributors will be added incrementally.Provider training
To become authorized users, providers must first complete an online tutorial that will be made available through their participating organization's Bronx RHIO Training Administrators. If you do not know who the Bronx RHIO Training Administrator is at your organization, please contact the Bronx RHIO office via e-mail at mail@bronxrhio.org or by fax: (718) 231-6314.Do I need an EMR to participate?
No, providers without EMRs may become view-only participants. Basic workstation requirements, however, must be met in order to participate. Click here to download the Workstation Requirements [pdf].Roll-out timeline
The system went "live" in June 2008 with data from five participating organizations and data-viewing capability by all participants. How will patient privacy be protected?
The Bronx RHIO privacy policy specifies that:- All state and federal laws and regulations regarding Protected Health Information will be adhered to.
- A patient’s data will be shared only after obtaining his/her written consent and only for treatment or quality improvement.
- Every patient has the right to refuse to allow the sharing of his/her medical information in the RHIO.
How patients are informed
The Bronx RHIO has developed a patient information brochure in English and Spanish that has been distributed to all Participating organizations and will be broadly distributed throughout the Bronx. The Bronx RHIO website contains downloadable versions of the brochure in English and Spanish. The website also contains a Fact Sheet for Patients, a Directory of Participants and a Map of Participants’ Sites. The Bronx RHIO will conduct a multi-media public awareness campaign to inform patients about the RHIO.
